WHEREAS, the National Bicycle Greenway (NBG) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of a nationwide network of bicycle trails that will in time criss cross America from north to south and east to west; and
WHEREAS in early June, the NBG will launch Cycle America 2000 to bring cyclists from all over the world to Washington, DC, on August 20, 2000; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of Cycle America 2000 is to showcase the need for a a system of multi-use recreation and transportation bicycle highways and thank those responsible for passing the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century; and
WHEREAS, the NBG has selected Santa Cruz as the starting point for the west coast departures; and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Cruz recognizes the bicycle, those who ride as well as those who support its use as important elements in maintaining a high quality of life in our community and environment; and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Cruz honors the efforts of its self propelled visitors and their contribution to our economy and is committed to encouraging greater expansion of services and routes to accommodate them.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Santa Cruz that it hereby supports the NBG and is pleased to accept the honor of being named the starting point for the NBG.
