Indianapolis Union Train Station – First in the Nation!

This is Union Station in Indianapolis, now known as Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station. It was this station that transferred East Coast rail passengers headed West to the transcontinental railroad.

As a data point in my book, “How Indianapolis Built America and How it will Rebuild it with the National Bicycle Greenway”, this was the first Union Station in the world! Before it came about, all the many different rail lines all used to have their own stations.

…..

Here is the 1888 version .

This is what it looked like when it was built in 1853. It served as the hub for *8* different train lines!
