A resolution supporting the National Bicycle Greenway and welcoming its supporters of "Cycle America 2000" to the City of Mount Rainier.
Whereas, the National Bicycle Greenway (NBG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of a nationwide network of bicycle trails that will, in time, criss-cross the United States from north to south and from east to west, and
Whereas, in early June, the NBG will launch Cycle America 2000 to bring cyclists from all over the world to Washington, D.C., on August 20, 2000, and
Whereas, the purpose of Cycle America 2000 is to showcase the need for a system of multi-use recreation and transportation bicycle "highways" and thank those responsible for passing the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century; and
Whereas, the NBG has asked that Mount Rainier serve as one of several staging areas for the final leg of travel to the Nation's Capital, and
Whereas, the City recognizes the recreation, transportation, and environmental value of linking local trails of the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area with regional and national trails, and
Whereas, the City recognizes that the NBG will enhance the recognition of the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area as a confluence for bicycle trailways that includes the American Discovery Trail, East Coast Greenway, and Star-Spangled Banner Trail.
Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Mayor and City Council of Mount Rainier, Maryland, that it supports the National Bicycle Greenway, offers its warm welcome to riders supporting Cycle America 2000, and is pleased to serve as one of the staging areas for riders final leg of travel to the Nation's Capital.
