While a small percentage of people still burn what is commonly called turf over here,  to heat their homes any more, here is a pile of peat (turf), the produce of the bog lands that make up 1/6 of the Irish island, in a barn…….

Interestingly, bogs are a man made phenomenon that began many thousands of years ago when the forests that once covered Ireland were cut down for shelter, warmth and mostly for farming.
