[A]  This year, Tom Ayres kicks of our 2017 Mayors’ Ride with a ride from a send off from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf to Napa where this picture was taken of Scott Campbell with Mayor Jill Simmons Techel in 2006. From Napa, he will travel Saturday morning to Winters and then our Second Davis NBG Fest where he will be received by Mayor Robb Davis!

Message me if you want to join Tom for his ride in from Winters and Steady Eddy’s Coffee House and/or Mike’s Velo City and/r Lorenzo’s Market and/orEl Pueblo Meat Market & Taqueria

[B]  The proclamations from the cities of Davis and from Oakland that you’ve seen me represent in here, are due this upcoming week. Both offices responsible for their creation told me thy would be on their respective Mayor’s desk for signature when the weeks beings!

{C} Finally spoke with Ken Bradford of Ken’s Bikes. Once bike season kicks off, it’s hard for bike industry people to make contact.  And yet we found some phone time. We firmed up how he will show up at our Festival. Ken will be there, possibly with some of his mechanical aces, doing bike safety checks!

[D] Who  Update NBG Proclamtion storyboard?

I just resurrected the storyboard that went in to storage when I went to Ireland for five years to raise my little boy. A handsome piece, we used it to display important National Bicycle Greenway documents which include photos from our annual Mayors’ Rides, press about our organization that I have been able to get by using my story as well as select Proclamations in support of the NBG that we have been able to collect from big city mayors all on our route from San Francisco to Washington DC.

The storyboard is three 4′ x 4′ attached panels that fold down to one. Covered in green felt, the edges are protected by lightweight aluminum trim

Is there anyone out there who I can give this to along with current pictures, newspaper articles and Proclamations that would be able to take it on as a project to get it current? I would like to be able to have this for her booth at  The whole earth festival and at our Davis NBG Fest.  Can anyone help?

Rajas logo

[E] Raja’s Tandoor, an all you can eat, healthy vegan food buffet is going to feed our Second Davis NBG Fest attendees on Saturday May 27! Talk about Davis-centric, Rajas is such an institution here, they have their own WIKI – https://localwiki.org/davis/Raja%27s_Tandoor

And as a favorite for UC Davis students, they are even a UC Davis approved caterer. I can’t wait for all my non-Davis friends to fill themselves to the brim with Raja’s delicious food!!

I mean what could be better? Listening to the great music of the Roots Man Project, KENI and Charles Lang and the fun stories Timothy R. Brummer will be telling us about how one of his Lightning Cycle Dynamics bikes crossed America in 5 days, 1 hour, after Mayor Robb Davis receives Tom Ayres who will have cycled in from Oakland and Napa bearing proclamations from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and Napa Mayor Jill Simmons Techel, all while we eat great food and sit in the sunshine at beautiful Central Park?!

[F] In the staging area for Davis Picnic Day 2017, I got a picture with Davis Bike Centric Mayor Robb Davis who will welcome Tom Ayres to our May 27 Second Davis NBG Fest. Tom will have ridden from Oakland, Napa and a group ride from Winters that Cheryl Newbern says she might be intersted in helping to get together with her champion level bike racer daughter, Naomi Hester!

I also got a photo with with Councillor, Rochelle Swanson. Rochelle asked if the two of us could meet so she can learn more about the part Davis can play in Main Street USA – the National Bicycle Greenway!

This as Councillor Lucas Frerichs, a board member of the Capitol Corridor rail line that connects Davis and Sacramento to the SF Bay Area, agreed to say a few words about this rail operation and why it’s so important to Davis cyclists!

btw: Councillor, Brett D Lee is seated to the left of the Mayor, while Councillor, Will Arnold is seated to his right in the back of the fire truck. Councillor Lucas is standing behind Rochelle.

[L] Wheelman, Brodie Hamilton, now a Transportation Demand Management Consultant and the  former  Director of Parking & Transportation for 12 years at Stanford after performing the same task at UC Davis for 14 years (he made both campuses bike friendly), took on a new role in the Picnic Day parade. Instead of riding his 19th century HiWheel, he let Bob Bowen’s son, Spencer, ride it as he drove his old-time car with us. The car had a sign on the door honoring the Davis 100 year centennial.

{M} Here is a small part of Central Park in Davis. In the right is the recumbent powered, children’s merry-go-round which we hope to have running at our event for which here is an interesting short WIKI of what it’s all about -In addition, here is the fascinating Central Park WIKI

[N] With the help of a walker named Olivia, I recorded this for Cayo, my son in Ireland, who many of you saw me teach how to ride a bike. He’s going to be 6 on July 1. And in case you missed it, here is the web I ran for him when I was there for 5 years.

Taken on the Pelz overpass that crosses over I-80 to connect to South Davis, a newer and yet smaller part of the city. This is a part of my almost daily route to Davis Swim and Fitness and in riding the Pelz, I get to pass over three TransAmerica arterials. I-80 connects San Francisco with New York City, the Lincoln Hwy (now a bike path here) of 1927 that I-80 superseded, and the rail line that connects to nearby Sacramento the SF Bay Area and the Transcontinental railroad of 1869..

More about the Pelz.

[OCoast-to-Coast Mayors’ Ride Rider(s) Wanted
After 14 years of Mayors’ Rides, we have fleshed out the Main Street USA – the National Bicycle Greenway route from San Francisco to Washington, DC that went live in 2014 and are looking for a cyclist(s) to ride it. We are looking for someone who can pay their own expenses and do the ride during the months of June and July, leaving our Second Davis NBG Fest on May 27, so we can work with you as well as publicize your journey. Since we will also be busy seeding the route at http://BikeRoute.com with those businesses that service cyclists in our 20 NBG Biking Cities, it is probable that you will find yourself in receipt of complimentary food, lodging and bicycle goods, etc !
You will be interfacing with 20 big city mayors and/or their office staffs. Toward that end, our 20 city, Mayors’ Ride schedule is HERE
To ride for us, reply with your interest at NBG@BikeRoute.com

[POn Saturday, July 1, we are reversing the direction of our annual ride between Palo Alto and San Francisco. Instead of leaving from Palo Alto this year, we are leaving from San Francisco. Our ride meets at the Willie Mays statue in front of AT&T Park on the Embarcadero. Tentative departure time 9 AM.
The beauty of our re-structuring the ride in this way is that we will leave San Francisco while there is minimal traffic and we are still fresh for the hills that precede the mostly flat part of the rest of the ride. Along the way you will get a chance to go through downtowns the 101 freeway and Caltrain commuters speed by on a daily basis. As a right of passage, this will help you earn your stripes as a legitimate peninsula cyclist. To be able to know a bit more intimately what the 10 cities of:

South San Francisco
San Bruno
Millbrae
Burlingame
San Mateo
Belmont
San Carlos
Redwood City
Atherton
Menlo Park

look like from a bicycle seat will give you an inner satisfaction as you sit on the train and hear their names called out as you pass by the stations that serve them.

The route we have been using since 2003 also makes for a safe and easy ride filled with sights of an era long gone by. It is why the former mayor of Palo Alto, Yoriko Kishimoto, returns every year to make this a memorable part of her and her husband, Lee Collins‘s, summer. We have also had other esteemed guests return such as Daniel Kottke, employee number one at Apple computer and Steve Jobs former best friend, as well as Barry Burr the dynamic inventor of the miraculous Barry Beams bike lighting system.

Here for example are a couple of blog entries about the rides we’ve done:
